The Rules of Fandom

John and I discuss the rules of fandom, mention a Blues drought, touch on the Duke-North Carolina rivalry, and much more.

  1. Blues expanded in 1967
Longest drought is the Toronto Maple Leafs with 42 seasons (Blues 39)

  5. Truman is a D2 school.... PLEASE DO RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GUYS START MAKING STUPID POINTS! I can handle people who make stupid arguments, but I can't handle people who make stupid arguements AND make up shit!

its also a shame i cant root for illinois anymore since i never went to U of I and live in missouri.....

  6. Question. I am from St. Louis, Missouri. Now this means I can ONLY root for the Cardinals, Rams, Bulls/Thunder and SLUH? And I am not allowed to wear clothing from other teams?

    Thanks for the rules.....

  7. Are we allowed to root for European soccer teams? Because according to these rules we aren't allowed to!

  8. i know Truman is D2..if we said D3 or something different, my fault must not have been paying attention.

also i guess we failed to go into detail about european teams and such. But I cheer for Bolton, because i love Stuart Holden from the USA team, so even when it comes to europe i still follow the geography rule by cheering for a usa grown player. but i also understand if you like barcelona because you enjoy watching messi play. since most people from the usa dont have close relatives from europe and obviously dont live there, thats an issue where you can really pick whoever u want, as long as u have put some thought into it (such as u like messi, or holden, or the style of play a team has, something like that) for example i know simmons pulls for liverpool since they share the same owner as the red sox.

and to the other anonymous, like i said, these are how mark and i view how people should be fans. No one is stopping you from liking a team from another city, but if you claim to be a yankee fan and have no ties to them whatsoever, i'm gonna call you a bandwagoner and we probably wont get along. as for the the whole clothes thing, theres nothing wrong with wearing other teams apparel. but my point is, im a huge blues fan..why would i want to support the dallas stars by wearing their shirt? i have no interest in seeing them succeed, especially over my blues. but like i said in the pod, the clothes thing is something i dont care too much about. im not gonna dislike someone for wearing a tampa bay hat, i just wouldnt wear it myself.

  9. Barty Boo, you can't necessarily say that our arguments are stupid. I think they are quite logical. I would say people cheering for random teams is illogical. As for you and Illinois I still don't get why you do it but I know that you care about them very much. I hope you enjoy cheering them on to mediocrity in football and slightly above mediocrity in basketball.

But to say our arguments are stupid is just plain inaccurate. And very hurtful. I'm crying in a corner in my room right now. Take it BACK!

    Love you.

  10. haha yea i just like giving you shit mowery, even though i have family ties to illinois (isnt that some sort of rule?). heres a question for you about fandom?

my brother was born in Wisconsin and raised in STL. BUT hes a washington redskins fan because when he was young he watched them play in a super bowl and has liked them ever since?

is he "allowed" to root for the redskins?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well, you will have to define "born in Wisconsin". If he moved away before ever remembering a Packers game, then there is no connection there. Then I would ask, what year was he at the age of about 6 or 7, and if the Cardinals were still in town or not, and if the Rams had come yet. If he watched the Redskins between 1989 and 1995, then I would claim complete legitimacy because he had no other options. I would also ask what kind of influences were coming from his parents? Because we stated and agreed that if you are brainwashed a certain way, regardless of where you live, then its acceptable.

However, if he was in STL when the Cardinals were the city's NFL franchise, why didn't he become a Cardinals fan? I'm sure he had many more opportunities to watch them or even go to a game live that featured the Cardinals than he did with the Redskins.

If said Super Bowl was when St. Louis didn't have a team, then he's ok. But just imagine if I had decided that I liked how the 49ers looked when they were in the Super Bowl in 94 and called myself a 9ers fan. Wouldn't that seem ridiculous to you?

PS. I feel sorry for your brother. The Redskins franchise has been run into the ground.

  12. It was either early 80's, not sure year. I would imagine he was in STL, but he saw the redskins and loved the way they played and has been a huge fan ever since.

He is also a Rams fan because he lives in STL. Now when both teams play eachother he roots for the redskins. So does this mean he is not allowed to be a Redskins fan? Im confused....

    Help me out guys!!!

  13. Yep. According to the American Constitution, he is not allowed to cheer for the Redskins because they have a racist mascot name. hehe
